Book Review 19: Fantastic Beasts & Where To Find Them by J.K.Rowling

Actually, I am reading "The Scorch Trials" at the moment, but a couple of days ago I received this book, and as it's really short, I thought I'd read it in between.

Fantastic Beasts & Where To Find Them (Hogwarts Library) by J.K.Rowling

Things to know:

• I read the original English version
• It was published July 2009
• It has 123 pages
• Set in the World of Harry Potter and is supposed to a replica of the school book Ron and Harry shared
• I read this on 15th June 2015
• This is one of 3 books of the Hogwarts Library published for Muggles 

As mentioned above, this book is supposed to be a replica of the school book shared by Ron and Harry. The foreword was written by Dumbledore and the Introduction by Newt Scamander. 

This book gives a short definition of the term "beast" and a brief history how this definition came into existing.
The largest part of it is an A-Z of magical beasts and where they live.

To start with, I want to be honest and say, this book will only be enjoyed by people who really love the Harry Potter World. It reminded my of "The Shadowhunter's Codex", though of course the Hogwarts Library was published before. But both of them are supposed to be school books used by the heroes of the series, with some notes in the margins.
Fantastic Beasts is way shorter than the Codex though, which is great, as it wasn't overfilled with information. On the other side, I would have wished for more sketches of the beasts and a cover which looks nice and old. Those points clearly go to the Codex!
(BTW you can find my review of "The Shadowhunter's Codex" on the right under "January)
Also I would have wished for a few more notes written by Harry and co. Most of them were non-sense. And I have the feeling some "beasts" where missing, the Giants for example. Others, which played a bigger role in HP had only tiny descriptions, e.g. the  Thestral.
Maybe just a bit more detail, would have made it way more interesting!

On the plus side, this is a charity book (at least the UK version is), it's a good cause, so if you want to buy it anyways, get a new UK version on Amazon or something like that :D

I'd say this book is best read after you finished the whole Harry Potter series, but this isn't a must. The notes written by Harry and Ron aren't spoilers, but they do mention what happened throughout books 1 to 6.

Book Review 18: Sweep in Peace by Ilona Andrews

For all of you who don't know, the Innkeeper Chronicles are a free online fiction by Ilona Andrews, regularly updated on their blog. Later this will be published as a book as well, but on 7th June the last Chapter was added. YEAY!!! 

As I read this as it was written (more or less), I am sorry if I forget anything, but here you go:

Sean has left for an adventure, and Dina is in her Inn, with only one guest as always. She worries about her magical Inn, as it needs guests to survive. Not only because of finances, but because the magic of the Inn is stronger with people in it.
Then George, an Arbiter appears who asks Dina to host a peace treaty discussion at her Inn, which no body else would host.
Dina has to agree to save her home, but this is were the mess starts, as having three different parties at her Inn, who'd like to kill each other means a lot of stress...

I love Ilona Andrews, their books made me read again when I was 16. I hated reading so much beforehand! (And if you wonder why I am writing "their", it's because a wife and husband duo is behind this name).

The way this was published online for free made me take my time to complete the story. Usually I start a book, and when I like it, I read it in one or two days and I am finished. Here I couldn't do that. Even though I loved the story, I couldn't read more, as the authors were still in the writing process. It made me think about the story more, but also it gave me a tiny insight of the work authors do. This is a great Idea the two of them had!

I love how the characters develop in this story, and how you only get information slowly. Thus the tension also only builds up slowly.

There is nearly no romance in this book, which made me a little sad, but I guess this will be picked up in the next book.

Book Review 17 : Allegiant by Veronica Roth

Yeay, I am picking up with reading :3 So happy >.<
This time I'll review "Allegiant" by Veronica Roth, the 3rd and last book of the famous "Divergent" Series.

So, first of all I'd like to remind you again, that this is a review about the last book of the series, thus there will be spoilers to the first 2 books. You are warned! I won't tell you the end of this though :P

After everyone in the City saw Edith Prior's video, 2 main groups are founded; Those who want to stay in the city, lead by Evelyn, and those who want to go out and meet the other people. Though the latter group is doing everything in secret, as Evelyn has all the power.
Still, Tris and Tobias decide to leave together with Christina, Clara, Peter and Uriah. Tobias also rescues Caleb and forces him to go with them. 

As they leave the city, they are picked up by two people from the outside world, one of them being Amar, Tobia's educator and friend, who should be dead. 

As they go with Amar, they find out what really happened, what the fractions are about and what a divergent really is.
I can't tell you more, as those would be massive spoilers.

I Personally would give this 4.5 / 5 Stars. I totally loved it!! 

The only minus point be the switching between Tobias' and Tris' views, which was kind of confusing at times. But this is really needed in the book, and every chapter announces who's point of view the next part is. 

All the main characters develop in some way, human decisions are made, which seem realistic to me. 

As you already know if you read a previous book, this isn't a book where happiness is the main point, rather the decisions people make and what effects those have. 

I also love the ending. It's just logic. I won't go into more detail here sorry.

Honestly read this! I love it so much. One of the best books I've read this year!

Book Review 16 : A World Without Princes by Soman Chainani

Oh gosh, I am so behind on my book reviews >.< But Uni is so stressy, I had to work a lot and I just didn't want to read... But now I am finally back reading!!! And I hope nothing comes in my way again until I catch up with my goal (I should be reviewing book 22 now ARGH).


But anyway, here is the book I'll review this time:

A World Without Princes (The School for Good and Evil #2) by Soman Chainani

Things to know:

• It is set in The School for Good and Evil and Gavaldon of the Woods beyond
• I started: 28th April and ended it: 1st June
• Book 2 of a triology

Agatha and Sophie have returned to Gavaldon and are celebrated like heroes. But after a time, this wears off and Sophie's father is going to get married. During the celebrations Gavaldon gets attacked and wanted posters of Sophie appear. Agatha does her best to protect her friend, but the town eldest give Sophie to the attackers and Agatha follows her. 

They end up at school again, but it is no longer The School for Good and Evil, it is now The School for Girls and Boys. After Agatha decided for her friend and against her prince, something changed in the world of fairy tales. Girls no longer want Boys and the other way around. The Genders have become enemies, not good and evil.

In the school for girls, Aggie and Sophie are celebrated as heroes and role models again. Sophie loves this, Agatha wants to go back home. The problem is, for peace to be restored their story has to finish. There are 2 possible ways for this to happen, either both girls wish for return home together, or Agatha kisses her prince. But Sophie likes to be celebrated, and Tedros wants to kill Sophie to make sure Aggie can't decide for her again...

I'd like to make sure once more that you know this book is supposed to be for children (around 8-12 as stated on book 1). 

I didn't like book one that much, book two wasn't better in my opinion. First of all, why would Agatha trust Sophie, if the latter tried to KILL her? It doesn't make sense to me. Then, why would good and evil team up even though they hated each other a couple of months ago, to fight people who they were friends with before, or even in love with. And why is it about killing each other? Those are children under the age of 16! WHY?
The only really good thing is, how the sexist view was changed. This book shows, girls can be boys as well, and the other way around. I loved that part actually xD
The rest of this review would be very similar to the one from book 1.

Should you read it? Nahhh... I mean if you read book one already okay, but otherwise I wouldn't recommend it... maybe to pre-teens or something >.<
But I have to say I'll probably read book 3 to finish the triology. Not because I like the series that much, but rather because this book had an open ending and I need a finishing line... honestly I get mad otherwise, I know I am strange!

Book Review 15: The Shadows by J.R.Ward

The Shadows (BDB #13) by J.R.Ward

Things to know:

• It is set in Caldwell, New York (Year not mentioned but round about now)
• I started: 26th April and ended it: 27th April
• Book 13 of the "Black Dagger Brotherhood" series

For all of you who don't know the BDB series, here is a short introduction to the series:
As you can imagine, this is about the Black Dagger Brotherhood, what a surprise xD They are a special breed of Vampire-Soldiers protecting their race from the undead Lessor-society. Each book is about one of those soldiers, or a someone fighting with them, as in this case.

This book is about the Shadows (a different kind of Vampires) Trez and iAm who are fraternal twins. At Trez' birth the stars were aligned in a certain position, deciding that he will have to mate the future Queen and have children with her. Trez however, doesn't want to be the s'Hsibe Queen's toy and thus lives in Caldwell with his brother iAm (they have been appearing in the last couple of books). Then Trez falls in love with the Chosen Selena (already happened in the previous book) and when he finds out that she is fatally ill, he finally mans-up and they spend their time together - having fun. On the other side there is iAm. He tries to protect his brother, even from Trez himself. As he tries to find a cure to Selena's illness though, he himself falls in love with a maichen, the s'Hisbe version of a maid...

SPOILERS AHEAD YOU ARE WARNED!!!

 

 

 First of all, I REALLY enjoyed this book, I read it in a (about) 24h period (minus sleep).

 

I usually try not to put spoilers into my reviews, but I really can't with this one, as you wouldn't understand why I'd love to praise J.R.Ward!

 

"The Shadows" is all about deaths. I've counted 3 deaths the readers are supposed to feel sorry for.

 

 

 

IF YOU DON'T WANT TO KNOW WHO DIES, DON'T READ!!!

 

But the deaths aren't all the shockers. 

 

Layla finds out she is pregnant with twins, not only one young. Around the same time Xcor breaks their agreement.

Luchas is still in bed, asking his brother Quinn, to please let him die.

Then there is Selena, fatally ill.

A woman at Marissa's sanctuary dieing because a young died during her pregnancy.

The second daughter of the still s'Hsibe Queen, born under the wrong stars, and thus having to die.

Rhage is suddenly breaking down.

And if Selena dies, will Trez survive?

If you'd have to guess who dies, who would you choose??
I can tell you I would have chosen the wrong ones, knowing the previous books of Ward.
And this surprise made me love J.R.Ward all over again!

The deaths are: the unnamed woman at the sanctuary, the second daughter of the s'Hsibe Queen, and most surprisingly Selena.

When I started reading this book, I was all like: "no not again" It reminded me too much of Rhage's book (#2 of the series). "Another sick female, which will be saved in last second."
As much as I love fantasy and also romance, I hate how some authors just stay with a plot that was successful for them at the start of a series.
But this is different. Selena actually died.

I cried, a lot! It is a very sad book you shouldn't read when you are down already.
On one side, I would have loved Trez to find a happy ending, but on the other side the thing is, it's way better for the whole Series that Selena died, even though I actually REALLY loved her character. The Series doesn't have the chance to be boring anymore (except if Ward does some major mistakes which I doubt), as you can't be sure if the books have a happy ending anymore. And I personally love that thrill!

To tell you the truth, when I read Tohr's book (#10) I was thinking that this series is really boring. I only read the next because it was about a gay couple, and I was really interested in that. Then I heard, book #12 wouldn't be about a new couple but about Wrath and Bella, who are already married for a couple of years now, and have some problems.
But "The Shadows" really makes me want to read more and more!!!
Thank you for making me love this series all over again J.R.Ward, I love how you are in for surprises!

Book Review 14: The School for Good and Evil by Soman Chainani

I know it has been a while, since I posted a book review, but here I go, trying to catch up again xD

 

The School for Good and Evil (#1) by Soman Chainani

• I started: 9th March and ended it: 26th April
• Book 1 of a triology

This book was a present from Lily (thank you so much!). It has a great cover, so I understand why she had to buy it xD

The book begins in the tiny village of Gavaldon in the woods beyond. There are two girls, who couldn't be different, but still are best friends. Sophie, blonde, blue eyes and as pretty as any princess, and then there is Agatha, short dark hair, dark eyes, who looks like a witch. 

In Gavaldon, every couple of years 2 children are kidnapped to go to a school and then maybe appear in a fairytale. One is always good the other child is evil. 
To make it short, Agatha and Sophie are the ones kidnapped, but there seems to be a terrible mistake happening, as Agatha is put in the school for good, and Sophie in the school for evil. 

As soon as they arrive, Agatha just wants to go home, while Sophie wants to switch schools to have a chance for her own"happy ever after".
 But this isn't all, they figure out, that when a student fail in 3 classes directly after each other, they fail, and in this school a fail means death. But if you are in the wrong school, how are you supposed to pass?

First of all, this book is meant to be for 8 to 12 year old. I'd personally not give this to my 8 year old cousin to read, but then again, teenagers might find it boring. The thing is, it's a fairytale type story (with namedropping loads of fairytale heroines, eg. Cinderella) which of course is great for the ages named, but then I found it brutal at times.An example for this would be how it is said, that students with lower ranks will be turned to animals to later help princesses, and some of those where stuffed and put in school corridors for new students to look at. Meaning; human children are STUFFED and KILLED... like honestly? I mean the 2 main characters are only 12, and they have to fear to be killed right from the start??
Another thing that I didn't really like is how it is said, that ugly girls are evil, and pretty ones are good - and you are only pretty with long and soft hair. This (or something similar) is said a couple of times, and I can't really understand, as this tone only changes to the very end of the book...
And then when the ball comes, and every "good" girl, who isn't asked to the ball fails, because: "boys can do without girls, but what is a princess without a prince?" HONESTLY NOW??

I, as a 21 year old, fully understand that many of these things I criticise are meant to be sarcastic, but I am not so sure a 8 year old would always understand. 

As you can see from the time it took me to read this, I didn't enjoy it that much. It took me ages to get into and I personally found the middle part the most boring. It only got interesting for me on the last 100 pages or so.
What I want to say with all this is, that I don't really know who the target group is. If its supposed to be for pre-teen girls, then please don't talk about stuffed students in this way, if it's for older ones, please change your writing style.


There are still parts I liked though. For example how Agatha and Sophie always try to be friends even though they are supposed to be enemies...

Sorry for the very negative review, the book just made me mad at some points >.<

Book Review 13: The Mane Attraction by Shelly Laurenston aka G.A.Aiken

• It is set in New York City and Smithtown (Tennessee (I'd guess early 2000s), shortly after book 2
• I started: 23rd February 2015 and ended it: 8th March
• Book 3 of "Pride" Series

After Smitty's and Jessie Ann's wedding, Sissy Mae wakes up in Mitch's bed (nope nothing happend). They joke around and Mitch is shot and badly injured. Sissy takes him with her to Smithtown, to keep him save, but her eldest brother doesn't like that a lot. She takes care of Mitch, but soon finds out, he eats more food than what should actually fit in. To make everything even more complicated, they start having sex, without any feelings of course. 
Well, what do you think will happen? I mean, not too difficult to guess if you've read the previous books in this series right?

I didn't really like it this book. It reminded me WAY too much of Shaw and Ronnie... The plot is too similar... 
I am hoping this will still change in the series. I love G.A. Aiken's Dragon Kin Series so much...

Book review 12: The Beast in Him, Shelly Laurenston (aka G.A. Aiken)

The Beast in Him (Pride #2) by Shelly Laurenston (aka G.A. Aiken)

• It is set in New York (I'd guess early 2000s), about one year after book 1
• I started: 19th February 2015 and ended it: 23rd Feb
• Book 2 of "Pride" Series
• Is set in the same world as the "Magnus Pack" Series, just shortly after, you don't need to read that though :) This time though, Sara and Zach have a short guest role.

Smitty and Mace work on a nerd party as security on very short notice. The host of the party is Jessica Ann Ward, who had a crush on Smitty before he left for the Navy. Jessie Ann isn't the shy nerd girl anymore who was hiding from the girls of the Smith-Pack, now she is the rich, sexy alpha of a wild dog pack, who doesn't even remember Smitty's name anymore. So what is the logical next step? Exactly, try to convince her to have a dinner with him. 

It takes a time, but somehow they get closer again. And when another wolf pack is trying to bribe Jessie Ann's pack, Smitty helps her even though it may course trouble for his own pack...

Okay, honestly, I don't think that I am taking much away when I tell you that yes, the two of them will become a couple! 

It took me some time to read into the book. I don't really know why, but even though I like both characters individually, I don't like them as a couple. The women of this series are all a bitchy and even aggressive, which isn't bad for one or two stories, but this was the 3rd women like that (though at least she has a moral) and when I think about the other women and men left from the packs and prides, it is crystal clear that the will be other couples similar to the 3 which already got together in this series.
I know I mentioned it already in my previous review, but Shelly Laurenston's/G.A. Aiken's characters all seem to have similar characteristics... I hope it will change at least a bit though, I am not giving up hope!

Book review 11: The Mane Event, G.A.Aiken (a.k.a. Shelly Laurenston)

The Mane Event (Pride #1) by Shelly Laurenston (aka G.A.Aiken)

• It is set in New York (I'd guess early 2000s)
• I started: 15th February 2015 and ended it: 18th Feb
• Book 1 of "Pride" Series
• Is set in the same world as the "Magnus Pack" Series, just shortly after, you don't need to read that though :)

This book includes 2 stories.

The first one is about Desiree "Dez" MacDermot and Mason "Mace" Llewellyn. Mace is an alpha Lion who was in the Navy for 14 years and wants nothing else than to find his high school love Dez, a NYPD cop and ex-Marine. They quickly meet each other after a member of Mace's pride is killed, and Mace tries his best to convince Dez to have a date with him. Everything turns out quite well, but when Dez meets an informant she is slightly poisoned, before she collapses on the streets Mace finds her and takes her to her place to care for her. Whilst Dez sleeps and gets better Mace finds out that she has two dogs - Sig and Sauer, well trained and usually rip everyone apart. But when Dez wakes up she notices that her dogs are scared of Mace, thus Mace has to explain to her, that he is a shapeshifter...

The second story is about Rhonda "Ronnie" Lee Rees and Brendon Shaw. Whilst Brendon is a lion shapeshifter who already has 2 children with two different women of his pride, Ronnie is a Werewolf who wants to settle down - but just a little bit!

When Brendon is attacked by hyenas and another lion pride Dez, Ronnie and the wolf pack rescue him. When in hospital, fighting a fever which may cause death Rhonda is the only one who stays at his side. But then he gets attacked in hospital and Ronnie gets him out of there to her aunts' house in Long Island. When shapeshifters have a fever, they act strangely, slightly as if they where high. So Ronnie has to catch him when he escapes and walks along the street in his lion form. 

The real problem is though, that even though Brendon is completely in love with Ronnie, the latter is scared of her (and his) feelings...

I've read quite a lot of books by Aiken, this is why I wanted to read this one as well. It is shortly mentioned in the first story, that it is set in the same world as her "Magnus Pack" series, but no information of that series is needed at all :)

Though I liked to read it, as something I don't have to think about it, I have to say that at some point Aiken's characters do resemble each other and somehow most of them fear love in someway or another... They are great stories if you only read one series, but if you read more (This is my 3rd) the characters do seem boring... I will carry on with the series though - it's some kind of sickness I have; when I start a series I just have to finish it. And honestly, this book wasn't that bad :)

Book review 10: A Blood Seduction, Pamela Palmer

A Blood Seduction (Vamp City #1) by Pamela Palmer

• It was published May 2012 (German version in August 2014)
• It has 368 pages (German 400)
• It is set in Washington D.C. and Washington V.C. and with the dates mentioned it should be somewhere between 2010-2020 (though I'd guess it's 2012)
• I started: 14th February 2015 and ended it: 15th Feb
• Book 1 of "Vamp City" Series

Quinn Lennox is 27 and works in a Laboratory, the only thing, or better - person, more important to her than her job is her half-brother Zack. Zack is a computer nerd and still doesn't understand, that he is actually in love with his best friend Lily. When one morning Lily suddenly disappears, Zack freaks out and asks for Quinn's help. As the two of them are searching, they are somehow dragged into a parallel world, a dead version of Washington D.C..

There, they are attacked by Vampires and are both made slaves, but for different vampire clans. While Quinn can be somewhat happy as her vampire lord at least doesn't want to hurt and kill her, Zack isn't as lucky and has to fear for his life. Quinn wants to get back to her World with Zack, and asks for help from her Vampire Lord Arturo, but he won't help her, and rather use her as his slave...

I have already read the "Feral Warriors" series from Pamela Palmer, liked it but somehow every book had the same plot, thus I wasn't going to buy another book written by Palmer, but as it was a Christmas present, I thought - why not :)

This book is completely different!!! It's way darker. Every time you, the reader, get to trust the male "hero" he does something to hurt Quinn again. I just couldn't decide on which side Arturo is really on, and a warning - it has an open ending!! And yes, I will read the next book too. (as much as I know it's supposed to be a triology).
With only about 400 pages it's a quick read, and I got hooked in the first chapter when people started to disappear!

All in all I'd say, that you should only read this if you have nothing against darker paranormal-romance. Because this does have the topics rape, slaughter, (sex-)slavery, etc. inside. Also this is not the kind of book where the guy falls in love with the girl at first sight and does everything for her. Because he doesn't!
